Dr. Murthy grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where his father was a physician. He had a
newspaper route in elementary school, joined the Boy Scouts and the debate team, and lettered in
wrestling. After completing a degree in biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University,
he graduated from Duke University School of Medicine in 1994. Dr. Murthy spent six years
training in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases at the University of Michigan in Ann
Arbor. He became a United States citizen on July 4th, 1996, and became Board Certified in
cardiology in 2000. Using his extensive training in echocardiography at the University of Michigan,
Dr. Murthy pursued an academic cardiology career for three years. During this time, he published
manuscripts, presented at national and international cardiology meetings, and taught medical students and residents. He joined Cardiac Disease Specialists in July of 2003, and lives with his wife, Dr. Geetha Rao, and his son and daughter in Peachtree City, Georgia. In his spare time, he enjoys backpacking, international travel, and canoeing.
